Stretcher transportation
Non-emergency stretcher transportation for riders who need to lie flat
Two-person crews and rear-access stretcher vans for riders who are bedbound, can't sit upright, or need to stay flat after surgery. Facility to home, home to clinic, and back.
What is stretcher transportation?
Stretcher transportation is a non-emergency ride for a person who has to lie down for the whole trip. The rider travels on a padded stretcher (sometimes called a gurney) that locks into a van built for it, and a two-person crew handles every transfer: bed to stretcher, stretcher into the van, and back again at the destination.
People use it after a hospital stay, for appointments when they are bedbound, and for moves between a hospital, rehab, skilled nursing, and home. It is not an ambulance. Our crews are trained in safe transfers and CPR, but they don't give medical care or monitor vital signs. If a rider needs oxygen titration, cardiac monitoring, or medication during the trip, they need a BLS or ALS ambulance instead. Our guide on wheelchair, stretcher, and ambulance rides explains the difference.
What every stretcher ride includes
- Two-person crew
- Two trained crew members handle every lift and transfer, at both ends of the trip.
- Rear-access stretcher van
- The stretcher rolls in from the back on a level path, with no tilting or squeezing.
- Bed-to-bed transfers
- We move the rider from their bed to the stretcher and from the stretcher to the bed at the destination.
- Comfort checks en route
- The crew checks on the rider during the trip and adjusts pillows and blankets.
- Facility coordination
- We work with nurses and discharge planners on timing, paperwork, and room numbers.
- Trained, vetted crews
- Background checked, CPR and first-aid trained, and certified for stretcher transport.
How to get ready for a stretcher ride
- 1 Give dispatch the rider's approximate height and weight.
- 2 Describe the pickup: floor, elevator or stairs, and how wide the hallways are.
- 3 Ask the facility to have discharge paperwork and medications ready at pickup time.
- 4 Tell us if the rider uses portable oxygen they manage on their own.
- 5 Have someone at the destination who can let the crew in.

Questions
Stretcher Transportation questions
What's the difference between stretcher transport and an ambulance?
A stretcher van carries a rider lying down when no medical care is needed during the ride. An ambulance has an EMT or paramedic who can monitor and treat the patient. If the rider needs monitoring or treatment on the way, book an ambulance.
Can you pick up from a hospital or rehab facility?
Yes. We take discharges from hospitals, rehab centers, and skilled nursing facilities across west metro Atlanta, and we coordinate the pickup time with the nursing staff.
How much does stretcher transport cost?
Stretcher rides need a two-person crew, so they cost more than wheelchair rides. The price depends on distance and wait time. Call (404) 390-9956 for a quote before you book.
Can a family member ride along?
Usually, yes. Tell dispatch when you book so we can plan the seating.
