What does ambulatory transportation mean?

Ambulatory transportation is a non-emergency medical ride for a person who can walk, with or without a cane or walker, and needs little hands-on help. "Ambulatory" means able to walk. The rider sits in a regular passenger seat, and the driver helps with the door, the seat belt, bags, and the walk to the clinic entrance.

It fits seniors who no longer drive, people who can't drive after a procedure or because of their medication, and anyone without a reliable ride to an appointment. Common trips are doctor and specialist visits, lab work, dialysis, physical therapy, and pharmacy runs. Compared with a taxi or rideshare, the driver is trained to assist older riders, waits for the rider to get inside, and can be booked for the return trip so nobody is stranded at the clinic.

We plan pickups so riders arrive with time to check in.
Return rides
Book the trip home with the trip there, or call when the visit runs long.
Trained drivers
PASS certified, CPR and first-aid trained, and background checked.
Confirmation the day before
Dispatch calls to confirm the pickup window.

How to get ready for an ambulatory ride

  1. 1 Have the appointment time and the clinic's address and suite number ready.
  2. 2 Tell us if the rider uses a walker or cane so we leave room for it.
  3. 3 Mention stairs or a long walk at the pickup address.
  4. 4 Bring a phone, insurance card, and the medication list.
  5. 5 If you're arranging a ride for a parent, give us your number too.

  • "Excellent service from Paul... He arrived ahead of time and helped me into his van with step-stool (I am very short). The ride to my appointment was stress-free despite all the road construction and traffic. Paul took his time and got me safely to my appointment early. He waited for my appointment to be over and then got me back home. I am using his service again as I am so pleased with it."

Questions

Ambulatory Transportation questions

Is ambulatory transportation the same as a taxi?

No. Our drivers are trained to assist older and medically fragile riders, help from door to door, and wait to see the rider safely inside. You can also book the return trip in advance.

Can the driver wait during the appointment?

For short visits we can often wait. For longer ones, we book a return pickup. Tell dispatch the expected length of the appointment when you book.

Do you take riders to the pharmacy after an appointment?

Yes. Tell dispatch about the stop when you book and we'll plan time for it.
